The hack at Capital One which impacted 100 million people has been described as one of the largest data breaches ever. A new law known as the SHIELD Act was sponsored by Sen. Kevin Thomas (D-Garden City), chair of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, aims to protect consumer privacy by expanding the definition and scope of the Attorney General’s powers to go after privacy violations. Sen. Thomas explained how the bill works and what more the state can do to protect New Yorker’s data.
